An Eagle Scout, a 1965 graduate of University of the South and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Tommy began his insurance career in 1970 with J.T. Sutton Insurance Agency, which merged with the W.A. Moore Insurance Agency in 2007. He specializes in commercial insurance coverages.

Tommy served as President of the Carolinas Association of Professional Insurance Agents in 1983-1984 and as President of the National Association of Professional Insurance Agents of America in 1990-1991. He currently serves as member of the Public Officers and Employees Liability Insurance Commission for the State of North Carolina.

He is a member of the Vestry of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, a member and past director of the Kinston Rotary Club, a member and director of the Kinston Home Builders Association, a member and director of R.A.D.D. of Lenoir County, a past chairman of the PRIDE of Kinston and past member of the Kinston Planning Board. He is also a member and past District Commander of the American Legion, a member of the Marine Corps League and the Vietnam Veterans of America.
